Aside from the contraindicated activities listed in the chart, a woman may use comfort to determine the form of exercise. If the activity becomes uncomfortable, she should either find a way to make it comfortable or find another activity.

Aerobics-High/Low Impact

Aerobic routines are dance-style movements that get you moving and shaking and your heart a-poundin’. In low-impact aerobics, you move horizontally (up and back, side to side) a lot but without absorbing much jarring and pounding. You usually have at least one foot on the ground, which rules out the high-impact activities like jumping and hopping. In high-impact aerobics, you experience more vertical movements, hopping, and jumping, which naturally have a stronger impact on you when you land. Weight-bearing exercise is good for you, so you should not be too quick to assume that the "impact" part of high and low impact is a good or bad thing. It depends upon your fitness goals. There are also combination high/low classes. If those are not available, try alternating between the two-class styles. Classes vary by styles of movement, intensity of exercise, and types of music. Most instructors are well intended, but you should watch out for those who use the class as a good excuse to get paid for a workout. You want an instructor who is interested in you and your ability to follow along in the class. Having a certified instructor can weed out a lot of bad experiences. Verbal projection and instructional skills are two qualities you want in a good instructor. If you do not care for the instructor's choice of music, ask if that is the normal type of music in the class and, if need be, find another class.

Arm Ergometer

This is a best-kept-secret piece of equipment. If you have a lower body disability or temporary injury that keeps you from using your legs, an arm ergometer will give you a workout. The arm ergometer rests on a tabletop and looks like the crank arm and pedals of a bicycle. You use your arms to pedal. It is an excellent upper body and cardiovascular tool used by many wheel-chair athletes for training, as well as a common rehabilitative too! seen in physical therapy offices. Ask your health club if they have or would consider having one.

Aerobic Activities Indoors

Indoor exercise is reliable, convenient, limits your exposure to outside risks, and can be more social if you so choose. Indoor exercise can be done at home, at a gym/club, or in a class. If you prefer indoor exercise and frequent a gym/club, you can expand your exercise options by having a backup activity to do at home. There are new indoor inventions coming to market all the time. The best indoor exercise is the one that works for you. Experiment with several before you hone in on one or two and be receptive to trying the new pieces of equipment that show up in your gym. The stationary bicycle might feel good when you work on your feet for 8 hours a day. But when you are promoted to the office job and spend more time on your glutes, the stair climber might sound pretty good.
